Air plants are actually called Tillandsias, which belong to the bromeliad family. They are classified as epiphytes because they do not require soil to grow. Instead, these plants absorb nutrients from moisture and tiny particles of dirt drifting through the air. Their roots are mainly used for anchoring themselves to a supporting surface, such as driftwood or trees.
